A Year 11 student at O Castro British School, Vigo, achieved the highest grade in Spain for his English Language IGCSE this summer, while the school community celebrated outstanding academic results across the board for IGCSEs, A Levels and UNED PCE exams for entry to Spanish universities.

Álvaro Morgade Carneiro, Year 11 at the international British school on the coast of Galicia, northwest Spain (pictured above), was distinguished as the highest achieving student from all schools affiliated to NABSS who took the Cambridge International Asessment IGCSE English Language.

Deputy Head of School Duncan Hill said, “We are all delighted with Álvaro´s fantastic achievement. He had first taken the examination in June and wasn´t satisfied with his result and so decided to re-sit the exam and went on to achieve the highest mark in the country. It is testament to his hard work and determination to become a Dentist and we couldn´t be prouder.”

Álvaro commented on the pride he feels at this achievement, saying: “This proves to me that the key to success lies in effort, commitment and dedication. This mindset of self-improvement and non-conformism is what we aim for at O Castro, where learning goes beyond academic commitment so that each day, each lesson and each project is an experience, shaping an open mind and an attitude of improvement. I am not alone in having high aspirations and ambitions and I know this is what is expected from a lifelong learner – our vision of a typical O Castro British School student.

“News like this certainly helps me now to stay motivated and to keep up with this progress in my final stage of academic study. I am taking Biology, Chemistry and Maths A-Levels and Biology and Chemistry as optional PCE subjects. My objective in life is to become someone who is useful as part of society; a society that must face new challenges and combat new adversities. We must all work hard and believe in ourselves.”

O Castro British School Year 11 students achieved fantastic examination results across the board, with 94.2 per cent of students achieving A* to C and nearly half achieving A* to A, at 47.1 per cent, and 74.2 per cent achieving A* to B.  The school welcomes Year 11s into the sixth form to continue their studies, following fantastic results for the first cohort of Year 13 students, ranking  highly in the country, with nearly a quarter of all grades being at A* level (24 per cent) and more than half being A* to A.

Results achieved by Year 13 students in the UNED PCE exams and Access grades were also outstanding. All students achieved an access grade above 9 and the average Access Grade was 11.6.
